Ebola Bundibugyo Outbreak Passes 10,000 Cases in Africa

The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has passed 10,000 confirmed cases and is now the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 28 October there were 10,305 confirmed cases and 4,996 confirmed deaths, with sustained transmission continuing in Congo.

The outbreak was declared in mid-May in the east of the country, and the World Health Organization has now said it has spread to additional countries through imported cases. Kenya confirmed its first case on 6 October in a traveller who had come from Congo through Uganda, and has since reported nine confirmed cases in Nairobi. Nigeria confirmed its first case on 20 October in the capital, Abuja, making it the fifth country to detect the virus in this outbreak.

Uganda reported about 20 cases earlier in the year and was declared free of the virus in August. Nigerian authorities have been tracking dozens of contacts of the patient, and the US Embassy in Nigeria has issued a health alert as surveillance is stepped up.

The Bundibugyo strain is a rare form of Ebola, and health officials say there are currently no licensed vaccines or treatments for it, which makes early detection, isolation of patients and contact tracing the main tools of the response. The World Health Organization has urged countries in the region to keep strong surveillance and readiness in place, while advising against restrictions on travel or trade based on the information currently available.

For now the risk of wider spread depends on how quickly new cases are found and contained, especially in crowded cities and along busy travel routes. Health agencies say that funding, trained staff and community trust will be decisive in bringing the outbreak under control.
